Two steps forward, three steps back. It looks like TIP is headed back to the slammer—this time for nearly a year.
After recently being released from a stint in prison for weapons charges, he claimed to be a changed man. You could feel it in his music. The hit track ‘Dead and Gone’ featuring Justin Timberlake had redemption written all over it.
He even scaled back his slang and delivery, substituting his twangy Southern style for a markedly more mature flow. The content of the song spoke to his change in attitude—and it really felt like he meant it.
He also worked on a special for MTV called ‘Road To Redemption,’ which followed him as he tried to reach out to other ‘at risk’ youngsters. Throw in a serious relationship with Tameka Cottle and I was convinced he had turned the corner.
Then came September 2010. TI and his wife were cruising through LA when they were stopped by police. After conducting a search of his vehicle, they discovered a substance that was later proven to be Ecstasy. On top of that, the rapper tested positive for opiates. To make things even worse, he was busted for ‘associating with a felon,’ who was in the car with him at the time of the incident.
Following that arrest, he was scheduled for a probation hearing in Atlanta on October 15th. Just a few days before the hearing took place, TI pulled off a miraculous move, saving a suicidal man from the ledge of a 22 story building. That news sailed through the middle of the week, painting him as a hero.
Sadly, the week will now end with stories of his prison sentence. He is scheduled to turn himself in to authorities in about two weeks.
